Civitavecchia Home Port for Cruising in the Mediterranean
CIVITAVECCHIA, also known as “Port of Rome”, is a major passenger terminal. Some major shipping companies have established here their "home port", thus beginning and ending their cruises here.We recommend an overnight stay in the city to take a walk on the waterfront and for visiting the Archaeological Museum. Tthe Forte Michelangelo, designed to guard the port and the city thanks to Pope Julius II, is the most important monument. Started in 1508 by Bramante, than by Sangallo the Younger and Giuliano Leno then, the fort was completed in 1537. Legend has it that Michelangelo has completed its work, building the powerful "fortification". Walking through the old town of Civitavecchia, in the heart of the medieval village, the ancient and historic Piazza Leandra shows a fountain in the middle of the same name. On the square, the Church of Our Lady of Grace or "Stella" is home to the venerated image of Our Lady of Grace since 1688 and is home to the Confraternity of the Gonfalone, fonde by St. Bonaventure. From here, every year, on the evening of Good Friday, begins the procession of Dead Christ, important and characteristic expression of worship, in which takes part a parade of hundreds of hooded penitents dragging heavy chains bare ankles and with large crosses wood hung on the shoulder. From this square one crosses the medieval walls across the passage named "dell'Archetto", the upstream port of the ancient city dating from the ninth century, leading to the adjoining Piazza Aurelio Saffi, from which we reach the Church and Oration Death, the oldest in the city. The small church, with simple and elegant architectural lines and surmounted by an elliptical dome, was built in 1685. The Confraternita della Morte, worthy institution which has existed since the second half of 1500, still is in possession of the church which was almost completely restored in 1702. Inside there are three altars, the largest of which is located against the front door, and the other two are located within well-decorated chapels, are placed one in front to the other. Beautyfull and not to be missed are the frescoes of the famous Knight Joseph Errante fromTrapani that decorate the inside of the dome and two statues, carved in wood, representing Jesus Crucified and Risen Christ. Do not miss a visit to the Terme Taurine archaeological-botanical Park; the area is a Roman bath complex whose ruins are an important historical record; rooms and pools are still partly embellished with mosaics. Current excavations are bringing to light additional witnesses.
