The medieval village of MARTA stands on a possible settlement of Etruscan origin, although the first historical site dates back at the 534 A.D., when queen Amalasunta of the Ostrogoths, Theodoric's daughter, was segregated and made to kill by his cousin Teodato on the Martana Islet. Around 1260 A.D. Pope Urban IV built the castle of which remains the octagonal Clock Tower. Not to be missed are the Clock Tower, the remains of the Fortress of Pope Urban IV, Palazzo Farnese, the church of Santa Maria. A visit to the Shrine of Madonna del Monte, goal of wagons full of food during the festival named “Barabbata”: the interior of the church preserves a precious chalice made of gold filigree that belonged to Amalasunta (every 14 May is commemorated the festival of the Madonna del Monte, also known as “Barabbata”).
The natural trail of Marta River is an itinerary for cycling and riding along the River from Marta to Tarquinia. For tacking this route have been used existing roads and new opened paths which make possible the access to interesting particular areas. The route is attended with road signals, rest areas and showcase for any information.
