Of Etruscan origin, according to tradition, PROCENO was founded by Porsenna in the sixth century B.C.. At the border of Tuscany and along the Via Francigena, the oldest part of Proceno has many medieval buildings, including the Fortress with turrets and towers. St. Agnes and Santa Maria del Giglio are two churches of medieval foundation, largely restored at different times, with remains of original structures and interesting altars and decorations from the sixteenth century onwards.
