VITERBO, the “city of Popes”. Nice is the visit to the medieval quarter of San Pellegrino, a beautiful example of the thirteenth century. The Museum of “Macchina di Santa Rosa”, housed by the association of "Facchini di Santa Rosa", presents memorabilia, posters, documents, photographs and books relating to procession of the “Macchina di Santa Rosa”. Interesting is the visit to the shrine where her incorrupt body is preserved. During the night on every September 3rd the “Macchina di Santa Rosa” is transported in a procession, followed by the inhabitants of Viterbo.
A guided tour to the Botanical Garden of Viterbo is very interesting, especially for young people and schoolchildren; a half day visit is recommended. It is possible to learn about the many varieties of the botanical collection and the possibility of practising interactive workshops.
Not far from Viterbo, in La Quercia, the Shrine of Santa Maria della Quercia, by the great Italian architect Giuliano da Sangallo, is a huge complex at the end of '500, where the simplicity of the architectural lines blend into a harmonious relationship that shows the construction period. Nearby, the splendid gardens of Villa Lante in BAGNAIA are one of the most significant monuments of the late Italian Renaissance. The gardens of Villa Lante are a huge park and a magnificent "Italian garden style" with spectacular fountains and water.
Seven kilometers away from Viterbo, there are the ruins of Ferento, that is the remainings of the Roman city that reached its zenith in the Augustan era and those of the medieval period. Built on the height of Pianicara, the village of Ferento probably was a place of settlement of displaced persons from the nearby Etruscan village Acquarossa, destroyed around 500 B.C. during the wars of expansion of Tarquinia. Famous throughout the world is the Roman Theater, nowadays still houses summer shows; among the remainings to be seen there are the Thermal baths and the paving of the ancient roman road.
