Between Lazio and Umbria, ACQUAPENDENTE, known as the city of ceramics, of the flowers and of “Pugnaloni” assumes historical importance since the year one thousand, when it begins to benefit from its strategic location along the Via Francigena. The Benedictine Romanesque Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre has a stone marked with the blood that is said to come from the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. The Museo della Città presents a rich collection of Medieval and Renaissance ceramics. Interesting is the Museo del Fiore, which is open on weekends, within the Natural Reserve of Mount Rufeno.; Flowers are the protagonists of the famous tradition of “Pugnaloni”, floral mosaics that are paraded for the Feast of Madonna del Fiore every year on the third Sunday of May.
Nearby within the Nature Reserve of Mount Rufeno, are the village of Torre Alfina, with its imposing neo-Gothic castle, and the Sasseto Wood, a unique example of broad-leaved forest mesophyte with a rich fauna and flora with very uncommon in Lazio. Educational activities and guided tours of these places may be arranged.
